How electric car tax works
Since 1 April 2025 electric cars pay vehicle excise duty like other cars: a low first-year rate, then the standard rate every year. Electric cars registered on or after 1 April 2025 with a list price over £50,000 also pay the expensive car supplement for 5 years. The government also plans a separate pay-per-mile charge (electric vehicle excise duty, eVED) from April 2028. It's a proposal, shown here so you can see what it would cost.

Electric car tax: questions
Do electric cars pay road tax in the UK?
Yes, since April 2025. In 2026/27 an electric car pays £10 in its first year, then the standard rate of £200 a year. Electric cars registered from March 2001 to March 2017 pay £20 (band A).
What is the expensive car supplement for electric cars?
An extra £440 a year (£640 in all) for an electric car with a list price over £50,000, registered on or after 1 April 2025. It's paid for 5 years from the second time the car is taxed. The threshold for electric cars rose from £40,000 to £50,000 for tax periods from 1 April 2026.
How much will the electric car pay-per-mile tax cost?
The proposed rate is 3p a mile, so 9,400 miles a year would cost about £282, on top of normal car tax. Plug-in hybrids would pay 1.5p a mile. It isn't law yet.
When does the electric car pay-per-mile tax start?
The government plans to start it on 1 April 2028: you'd pay it from your first car tax renewal after that date. Announced at Budget 2025; consultation closed 18 March 2026; response and draft legislation published 13 July 2026 for technical consultation. Not yet law.
What list price is used for the expensive car supplement?
The car's published price before it was first registered and before any discount, plus any non-standard accessory fitted when it was first registered. GOV.UK suggests checking the list price with your dealer.
